In 1877 Mr. G. W. Suttles came to Texas from Zanesville, Ohio and started a pottery factory. The Erskin store building was purchased, and in this store the factory work began. There was quite a few varieties of pottery made, such as Jugs, from 1 pint to twenty gallons jars; one pint to twenty - gallon pans or crocks from 1 quart to 4 gallons. All sizes of flower pots, the size numbered by inches. This factory also had a brick machine installed and thousands of brick were made here and numbers of chimneys and flues are in use today, which were made at this place.A down draft kiln was used and held about five thousand gallons of ware, the ware was carried in by hand. Mr. Suttles set the kiln and when it was filled it was closed and a wood fire started and kept constantly burning about 48 hours; then it was gradually cooled and opened and drawn. The ware was hauled by wagon to neighboring towns, Seguin, San Antonio, Floresville and Stockdale.
