» History of La Vernia

La Vernia's first church was built sometime, in 1836 or following the Texas Revolution. The old rock church stood where the Concrete Cemetery is now. Old Graves were in the church yard. That is how the grave yard of today started. The same old road ran pass just as it does at present. The New Berlin road ran by the old church and every Sunday this road was lined with ox carts carrying both white people and negroes to church. The old church was the scene of many an old fashioned camp meeting, both whites and slave negroes attending. This old church took in both negroes and white people .

The second place of worship in La Vernia was the McCallister place. Worship first began here in about 1857. This place served as both a school and church. All the churches worshipped here for a long time. The house finally fell down. About this time a lady by the name of Mrs. Cruse, came here and lived across the creek. She furnished her home for school Sunday School, and church. The Presbyterians and Baptist worshipped here, and Mr. Garrison, was the preacher.

The Masonic Lodge was then used as a place of worship for all the churches, even the Episcopal. Mr. Wilson, was the Presbyterian preacher, who held revival meetings; Mr. Currie, was the Baptist preacher, and the Episcopalian preacher was from Seguin. The Presbyterians moved their church to where it stands at present. Mr. Green, was then the Presbyterian preacher. The Presbyterians asked the Methodists to come and worship with them, but the Methodists built them a church of their own. The Methodist church blew down, but another was immediately erected which still remains. The Baptist Church was the last church built. Many revival meetings were held. The greatest one was held by the Methodist and Presbyterians. Mr. Matthews, was the preacher and this was in 1912.
