Old Settlers
Published: 01/01/1937 by Anonymous
Mr. Rector, was one of the first settlers in La Vernia. He built the home where Alfred Lenz, now lives. This was about one hundred years ago. One morning he was hunting oxen on the Martinez River about nine miles north of La Vernia. He went up on some hills so he could look out over the fields, He noticed that Indians had located him up there, and he had only one opening where he could escape through. The Indians saw that he had started running so they took after him. While the Indians were chasing him, they would go for a mile and then jump off their horses to let them rest. Mr. Rector, did the same with his horse. They kept this up until Mr. Rector, finally escaped. This happened near the "Good Night Home". Some of it's parts still remain near the Martinez River.
Mr. McCoy, was another old settler. He was owner of the Old Duelm Home where Chris Bauer now lives. Some of the settlers in La Vernia area were the Pa lores, McCallisters, Morgans, and Hendersons, and others. The old Morgans, lived in the old rock house west of town. Mr. Henderson, went to the war and probably was killed but anyway dropped out of sight. In 1870 Herman Suhre, came to La Vernia and boarded with a family named Rector. The family lived in a log cabin near Alfred Lenz's, place and he went into business with Ed Tewes. Their store was built in 1870. In 1891 Mr. Suhre sold out his business to W. E. Smith, who now has a large business in Seguin and San Antonio. Mr. Suhre, then went to Germany on a visit to see his sister and stayed six months. The old Settlers here at the time were Suttles, Houston, Wiseman, Wolff, Seiderman, Rector, and McClung. At the time, there were two stores in La Vernia, Wolff, and Craig. Wolff, store was where Linne's store now stands.
