Temperance Society
Published: 01/01/1937
The Temperance Society was sometimes called the Band of Hope. It was the first society ever organized in La Vernia. It was called the "Band of Hope" because its members hoped that no saloons would ever be built here, as there were none here at this time. This was established in 1870. The meetings were held in the Masonic Lodge. Songs were sung, speeches were recited, and dialogues were read at the meetings. Mrs. Braham, played the piano for them. She played the piano, for churches also. Mrs. Cruse, who was a great Christian, looked after the spiritual welfare of the business of the Masonic Lodge.
